He qualified to teach Drawing and Art History, gaining his first teaching experience in Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro, during the difficult years of Sardinian banditry. In Nuoro, at an exhibition entirely dedicated to drawing, he met Carlo Levi and Umberto Terracini, figures of the highest cultural standing, who would prove a crucial turning point in his personal and artistic journey. His wish to broaden his range of expressive means led him to attend the international courses in Printmaking Techniques at the Istituto del Libro in Urbino. It was there that his love for the art of engraving was born.
He joined the Incisori d’Italia when Marc Chagall was its patron and Carlo Carrà its president. From 1965, as a member of the Associazione degli Incisori Veneti, he took part in major national and international exhibitions; his industry and talent grew ever more evident. He came to know many critics and artists, especially from the Veneto area, among them Trentin, Guadagnino, Zarotti and Pizzinato. In 1982 a journey to Provence brought fresh life to his art. There he visited the places dear to Picasso, Cézanne and Van Gogh. From this experience came the inspired collection of etchings and aquatints titled “Viaggio in Provenza” (“Journey to Provence”), presented in France itself, at the Istituto di Cultura in Marseille. Between 1988 and 1996 he engraved around a hundred works in a trilogy inspired by the “madness” of two great characters, Don Quixote and Robinson Crusoe, and by that of a great figure of twentieth-century Italian poetry, Dino Campana, for “I Canti Orfici”.
From 2000 to 2018 he was Artistic Director of the Biennale dell’Incisione Italiana Contemporanea di Campobasso, a Molise institution born from his dream of making his city an Italian centre of excellence for the promotion and appreciation of the art of engraving. With the support and friendship of Giorgio Trentin (1917-2013) and the art historian Floriano De Santi, that dream took shape and was renewed.
A passionate devotee of art, he maintained a constant dialogue — dialectical yet deeply empathetic — with critics, essayists, poets and engravers (Cimatti, Pierro, Luzi, Di Martino, Cambon, Croce, Fago, Trentin, De Grada, Dragone, Bettini, Apuleo, Civello, Milani, Compagnone, Jovine, Rimanelli, Micacchi). A great friend of Osvaldo Soriano, his engraving and painting style at times echoes the rawness and vividness of Soriano’s landscapes and the poetic sensitivity of his storytelling. His is an entirely personal grammar, one that does not set aside the legacy of the great Masters. The images, the colours, the lines, the mark have rendered the communication of pain spare, the testimony of a dazzling clarity, because behind the art lies life — a sensitivity practised daily, as an unwavering commitment alongside the least fortunate and alongside an artistic culture understood never as self-referential, but as a genuine opportunity.
He was a member of the Unione Nazionale Scrittori ed Artisti, of the Accademia del Fiorino in Florence and of the Centro Diffusione Arte in Italy and abroad, based in Rome. For years he was a teacher; he taught the Workshop in Techniques of Artistic Creation at the University of Molise, in the Degree Course in Primary Education Sciences.

“I am a Mediterranean artist by cultural tradition. He always worked in Molise and for Molise, while carrying his Art and his Land out into the world. Many have written about him, underlining the moral tension and the evocative power of his work. A passionate man and a fervent, prolific artist, he devoted himself to several figurative languages at once. Drawing was always the means by which he fixed the Idea, the lines and forms of his message, universal and profound whether as marks on paper, engraved on copper and zinc plates, or as a brushstroke charged with vivid, brilliant colours on his canvases. In everything he left behind lies his passion for life and for people — an interest one might call Vergaesque for the world of the peasantry in particular, for history’s defeated, for the defenceless, the least among us. The deep bond between Art and Literature in Fratianni’s artistic path has often been noted, evidenced by the trilogy on the creative madness of Don Quixote, Robinson Crusoe and Dino Campana; critics have pointed to his love of mad, losing characters who are, in truth, heroes: pure and stubborn men who, without ever winning a single battle, rose above a disillusioned and resigned everyday life, unable to accept its discrepancies, its superficiality.

There is something fascinating in the thought that everything can always be put back into play, and so the world itself could be changed, in the most genuine sense of the term. He too had his Fathers, of course, and as he often said, he greatly loved the Expressionists: he did not go searching for clichés, but recognised in himself the same significance, because Expressionism is a movement that seeks explanations “within”, in man’s impressions, in his suffering, in lyricism, in his way of being in the world. The great Fathers do not therefore appear as citations, but rather as spontaneous encounters, born not of a wish to be like them but of a natural affinity, a natural meeting on converging paths.

1963-1964 – Open-air exhibition, Campobasso.
1965 – Nuoro, Galleria “Via Mazzini”.
1968-69 – Venice, Galleria d’arte moderna “Traghetto”
1970/71 – Campobasso, Galleria d’arte “Il Punto”.
1972 – Taranto, Centro Internazionale “Magna Grecia”
1973 – Campobasso, Circolo Sannitico.
1974 – Venice, Galleria d’arte “Segno Grafico”; Verifica ’74, Campobasso.
1975 – Acireale (Catania), Galleria d’arte “Accademia Ciclope”; Rome, Galleria d’Arte “Canovina”.
1976 – Tribute to Levi and Scotellaro, Campobasso; Florence, Galleria d’arte “Buca di Dante”.
1977 – Venice, Galleria dell’Incisione “Venezia Viva”.
1979 – Rome, Galleria d’Arte “Formastudio”.
1981 – Campobasso, Circolo Sannitico; “Prima rassegna d’arte Campobasso” (First Campobasso Art Exhibition), Campobasso, Galleria Comunale.
